Once upon a time, smart irrigation control was a hard sell. Property
owners, grounds managers and homeowners associations didn't see a need
for it. "Why put in an expensive smart irrigation system when the old
one works just fine?"
According to ancient legend, the Norse God of Thunder, Thor, could shake the earth itself with his enchanted hammer. But you do not need to be a Viking legend to have the same type of impact on your workload. Power tools can impact the modern professional’s workload, just like Thor’s magic hammer shook the earth.
Remember The Flintstones? The “Modern Stone-Age Family” that powered
their cars with their feet and used dinosaurs as power tools? That was a
great little cartoon, but it has nothing to do with anything happening
today, right? Well, if you’re a landscape contractor with
residential clients, you may have seen irrigation controllers that look
like they were made in Bedrock.
When we go to the movies, we escape from everyday life. Take a film like The Jungle Book. The
viewer is instantly brought to a land of adventure; a world of natural
wonders that many would give just about anything to spend some time
in. Of course, at some point we have to face reality;
most of us will never get the chance to live in the natural oasis that
Mowgli does. But, relaxing next to a waterfall in paradise doesn’t have
to be a dream.
Talk to any ‘old-time’ landscape professional about the business 20 years ago and you’ll see how different the industry is today, especially from the standpoint of technology. they’ll tell you that the good old days were both the best and worst of times.
It’s time to think spring. Sure, warm weather is still a few months
away for most of the country, but for irrigation professionals now is
the time to plan for a smooth, successful spring start-up season.
