Angie Hicks, founder of the powerful online consumer-services rating company Angie’s List, is urging all customers of landscape and other contractors to pay their service providers by credit card whenever possible. She believes that, too often, customers succumb to the urgings of contractors that they be paid by cash or check.
Hicks is fundamentally opposed to cash payment, because it leaves no paper trail for authorities to follow in case there’s a problem with the work. She also cautions against customers using debit cards, because of bank rules that may “freeze” the amount of money being claimed by the contractor in the event of a dispute.
In an Angie’s List poll of contractors, 65% said that they accept credit or debit card payments.
