Long-time lawn mower and power equipment manufacturer Briggs & Stratton is consolidating operations worldwide, shuttering a plant in Newburn, Tennessee, as well as one in the Czech Republic. The company will dismiss 240 full-time employees and 450 temporary workers in Tennessee. When the Czech plant closes, it will take 77 jobs with it.
The Tennesssee plant closing is slated for May 15th of this year. Work from the Tennessee facility will be done at a McDonough, Georgia plant, while the Czech operations will be taken up by a facility in Murray, Kentucky. The Tennessee plant made walk-behind mowers and snow throwers, while the Czech plant made small engines.
The company blamed reduced marketplace demand for the retrenchment. It is also making some operational changes at a facility in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, though no layoffs have yet been announced for that plant.
