Thieves in South Bend, Indiana, have stolen brass backflow preventers from several local businesses. Authorities say that the brass valves can fetch $25 at a scrap recycling yard. Meanwhile, the owner must spend $200 to $500 to buy a replacement.
The thefts took place along a single road; six businesses reported their valves stolen. Police blame the advent of winter and lack of snow for the string of thefts, since it makes the valves easily accessible from the street.
Authorities suggest that both businesses and homeowners remove the device after their irrigation systems are shut down for the winter, and reattach them just before spring startup. They also urge people to record the backflow preventer’s serial number. The police can then identify the device as stolen in case of resale.
