About 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth, Texas, the Wise County city of Newark is using goats to get rid of grass and weeds, in an effort to save money on the cost of landscaping.
Earlier this month, a family donated its five pigmy goats to the city; they are now being used to maintain the landscape around city buildings, by eating the weeds and tall grass. “The money-saving measure has proven successful,” according to Shawn Bartlett, Newark public works director.
“We try to find any way we can to cut some corners, so having the goats at our well sites and our waste water plant will cut down on our mantime where we have to mow and weed. It just seemed like an easy fix for the situation that we were in. In fact, Newark may buy more goats,” Bartlett said.
