By this time last year, Vermont landscape companies were sitting pretty, making money hand-over-fist in the snow removal game. Last season’s unprecedented snowfall resulted in a steady stream of lucrative plow work for contractors from Burlington to Brattleboro. But this year’s mild winter has left many landscape companies struggling to survive.
Burlington, Vermont landscape contractor, O’Dell Walker said that last December he made about $15,000 from plowing driveways. This year, he’s barely made half that.
Making matters even worse, a mild winter means less lawn damage to residential homes. Unless the next few months see an increase in precipitation, Walker expects his business to take a second hit in the spring from the decreased demand for lawn repair work.
