Two accidents over the holidays remind owners of landscape companies of the need to ensure that their field crews are properly trained, and to remember that safety comes first.

On Burmuda, an 18-year-old suffered an electric shock when his cutting machine touched a live wire.

His father, who was working with him, ran to his aid after hearing his cry as he fell from his ladder. Both worked for a local landscape company. The paramedics gave him CPR before being taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In another situation, a 25-year-old landscaper from New England severed his right hand while operating a wood splitter. His employer returned to the worksite to retrieve the hand, which was packed in ice and airlifted with the man to the hospital.
