A new bill introduced by Salt Lake City, Utah legislators could lift the restrictions on water harvesting for residents of that state. Although rainwater harvesting has been practiced for many years by homeowners who use rainwater to irrigate their gardens and other landscaping needs, it has been officially “illegal” because the state owns the water rights.
If passed, SB32 would allow for the collection of rainwater in a single underground tank of up to 2,500 gallons and in two above-ground containers of 100 gallons each. Harvesters would have to register online with the state water engineer's office and supply information about how much is to be collected and the collection point of the rainwater.
