Private snow and debris removal contracts have been keeping business booming for landscape contractors in the Baltimore, Maryland area, but that may soon change. Although they were happy to have a temporary windfall due to back-to-back blizzards, the long-term effects from a messy winter could cause bigger headaches once the snow melts.
Landscape crews from Natural Concerns, Inc., Sparks, Maryland, have been logging an average of 100 hours a week, an increase from the average 40-60 hours. However, with mounds of snow piling up, the company has had to put a freeze on the eight ongoing projects they had been working on in preparation for warmer months. The result could be a backlog of work and the prospect of turning down new work until the stalled projects are completed, the company says.
Though the snow wiped out gardens and landscaping across Greater Baltimore, companies fear that because of the current economic conditions, many of their clients won’t be spending as much, if anything at all, to replace them in the spring.
